KC, Jayme, Jordan Sola System Project

We plan to make a travel guide for the solar system as well as planning a "cruise" like trip.  We will each be assigned 3 planets to research and make brochures for, as well as together planning a "cruise" like package. The information that will be included will be distance from the sun, size, terrain, weather, moons, gravity information, and time information. We will also include fun things like transportation options, excursion options, and fun facts about each planet.

Data Visualization

  1. What did you think of the video?  What was striking?  Interesting? Eye-opening?  What type of impact did this video have on you? I liked the video because it helped me to see the importance of data and getting it out there in a way that is capturing and effective. First of all he gave a lot of neat examples of data and presented it in some very interesting ways. I like the example of fears and how it showed which ones were most feared and which ones were least feared. It was interesting, captivating and also kind of humorous.
  2. How did this video affect you as a learner?  How did this video affect you as a teacher? It helped me to realize that I am a very visual learner and I retain information better by visualization. I also think that if I am ever teaching that I will take advantage of the resources in order for data to have more of an impact of students.
  3. We are trying to re-hone our view of science towards story-telling, a concept aimed at “softening” and making the process of science more accessible.  How does story-telling hook into “The Beauty of Data Visualization”?  Can you give some specific examples of how his use of visualization enhances story-telling using data? Story telling is an effective way of hooking people into the beauty of data visualization simply because it engages the listener that much more. Rather than just giving the learner a picture with data on it, it helps to explain that data in a way that incorporates real life and situations that anyone can relate to. For example when he talked about the video game fears during the month of April. He doesn't just say that fears are higher during that month, but he lets us know why. 
  4. This is a bit of a jump – can you see connections between his work and our very simple investigations on burning candles?  Think about how you presented your information and some of the presentations that other people made. I can see a connection because for example our group used videos pictures and tables to present the data that resulted in our project. I don't thik that the data would have impacted anyone nearly as much if we hadn't included those things and I think it is the same for the other groups.

Okay.... so today we had some bigger balloons and we started by tying them to a lighter house made from card stock...

So... That was kind of lame.... So we then tied a ton more balloons to the Actual heavier cardboard house... 30 to be exact. The problem with this was that we ran out of helium and the house was too heavy to be lifted... just slightly. So we had to cut the bottom of the roof out and also the bottom of the house.... IT WORKED!!!!


We really wanted to see how high it would go and also see how it would handle outside in the breeze... so.... we tried it....

This is the "vision" for our house....


Today we built our house out of cardboard and attached the string.... unfortunately we didn't have the balloons filled with helium yet so we didn't get too far in our experiment.


We assembled our house by first taking a plain cardboard box. We taped the sides up and attached cardboard pieces to each side in order to create a homey shaped. We then cut holes in the roof of the "house" and threaded the string through the holes! 









Our next step was to measure and weigh our "house"

REINA SABRINA JORDAN "CHANGING EDUCATION PARADIGMS"

  1. Well, It was very interesting. I liked the Animation, it kept my attention. Plus, it had humor in it, which was good. I thought the video was funny because the creator of the video, his drawing to describe how the idea of education is looked at in many different ways. Which could be taken humorously or seriously. I liked the video. I agreed with a lot of it, however, I have a hard time thinking that we could change it that drastically because of the society in which we live. I liked the idea of diversity in schools because I have always been a strong believer that ADHD is kind of a myth, like he said, I'm not qualified to make that assumption, but I do believe that everyone learns differently and the school system in the U.S. disregards that. RANDOMNESS
  2.  Well, I agree with his point about medicating children. I believe that putting children on medication to fix a "problem" is saying that there is something wrong, when in fact it is not wrong. I have been around special education children who have been put on meds to make them behave or focus which in my opinion hinders them more than it helps them, because then they get caught up in this world of trying to be better because they are not good enough or because they just don;t get it. I'm done. I completely agree with the point of the video where the creator brings up the subject about all children who don't pay attention in school are considered "dumb." With children not paying attention in class, the teacher immediately prescribes the child as ADHD, and what teacher has the right to prescribe a child? I agree with the video for the most part, I had all kinds of ideas running through my head while watching. But the part that really stood out to me was the part about ADHD simply because I believe that it is really just an excuse. Our school systems are all about testing and assessment rather than about actually teaching. Even if the teachers actually cared about the students learning and understanding it wouldn't matter because the school system doesn't and the teachers are controlled by the school system. Our society has become so obsessed with this "model" of success and it is ridiculous. We were each made uniquely and for some reason being unique is not accepted today in society. We should be more concerned with learning, understanding and using our unique gifting rather than become a "model for success".
  3. We all agree that the only thing about this video that we disagree with is the systematic approach to schooling. Although it would be nice to be able to make it less systematic and more student centered, it isn't possible simply because there will always be students that need structure and will not do it on their own responsibly.

  5. Yes, and we feel that it already is. UNANIMOUS!

Up, horozontal, down

Reina, Isabel and I had to make our bean go up one meter, horizontal one meter and down a meter. To do this we first took a meter stick and set it up vertically. we then attached a clip to the top of the meter stick and looped a piece of string through the loop. At one end of the string our bean was attached and at the other was a bag full of beans. We then attached a paper dixie cup at the top right hand side of the meter stick with the mouth of the cup facing horizontal. We set another bean inside the cup. Then we taped a shoebox in back of the meter sick and attached a wooden ruler. To make our machine work, you drop the bag of beans onto the wooden ruler. This results in first of all causing the 1st bean to go up a meter and secondly it causes the wooden ruler to fly up hitting the dixie cup and launching the 2nd bean into the air only to fly horizontally one meter and then down another meter,
